Dawn’s fund-razor is in aid of pal’s cancer fight

Student is shaving her hair off for Macmillan

- ANDREA LAMBROU

A big-hearted hairdressing student is braving the shave in support of a cancer-stricken classmate.

Paisley mum Dawn Campbell, 32, has pledged to shave off her long brown locks for Macmillan Cancer Care following her friend’s rare cancer diagnosis.

The student mum will have to undergo an operation and chemotherapy after placental site trophoblastic tumours (PSTT) were found in her pelvis.

Next year’s hair- raising challenge will take place at West College Scotland’s hair and beauty department where both women are studying hairdressing and barbering.

Dawn will also be donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs for children with cancer.

She said: “When I found out my friend had been diagnosed with cancer, I knew I needed to brave the shave.

“I’ve never shaved my hair before, but I’m not nervous about it because she doesn’t get a choice when it comes to losing her hair.

“She will be there on the day and is totally overwhelmed by the support.

“She has been thanking me repeatedly and can’t believe I’m shaving my hair.”

Macmillan is a cause close to Dawn’s heart after losing close relatives and friends to cancer.

She added: “My two aunts, gran and friend’s daughter passed away from cancer, which has really affected me and my family.

“Anything I can do to help and raise money, I’ll do it.

“It’s only hair, it’ll grow back. “This is something that my friend will have to go through and I will support her.

“I also don’t want my hair to go to waste, so I’ll be donating it to the Little Princess Trust.

“Children with cancer is such a horrific thing, so I think it’s a beautiful thing to do.”

Dawn is no stranger to fundraising, having taken part in a number of charity events over the years, including Tough Mudder in aid of Help for Heroes and Woman’s Aid.

She kindly gave a female relative a much-needed confidence boost at the height of her illness by styling their hair.

“My aunt Carol was bedbound from pancreatic cancer and used cards to communicate as she couldn’t speak.

“I went up and did her hair for her to make her feel good and she responded with a happy face card. The nurses said she looked lovely.”

So far, Dawn has raised just over £50 of her £300 fundraising goal.

She hopes people will dig deep for the cause.

She said: “We have charity buckets in the hair and beauty department in the college and canteen and promotional posters up. All the girls on the course have been so supportive.”

The big shave will take place on January 6 at 9.30am.
