Behave when you get out of prison, sheriff warns flasher

- RON MOORE

A sex offender who flashed at victims has been warned by a sheriff to behave himself when he gets out of jail.

John Shovelin, 40, was caged for ten months for repeatedly exposing himself to women.

Shovelin was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years after he was convicted of his third sexual offence at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He appeared in the dock for a review of his Community Payback Order where he it emerged he will be back on the streets by Hogmanay.

Defence agent Charles Drummond said: “He appears in relation to a review of the Community Payback Order, with supervision, imposed for a period of three years.

“He is due for release on December 31 and will be attending a hearing with the parole board prior to this.

“The parole board will be considering what other information is required prior to his release.”

The lawyer said matters, such as where Shovelin will be staying after his release and what measures the authorities have in place to continue supervising him, will also be considered by the board.

Shovelin was locked up after targeting female customers at changing rooms at Intu Braehead, in Renfrew.

He purposely left changing room curtains open while he was undressing.

He flashed his privates at one victim on February 24.

The married creep returned two days later to the same mall, where he terrorised another female shopper.

He was arrested after confronting customers at Ann Summers and New Look.

Previously, Shovelin sparked outrage for cornering a woman in a Paisley town centre pub toilet while showing off a pink thong in August 2017.

Before that, he was deemed such a danger to the public over his flashing that he was jailed for 22 months in 2009.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew told him: “I will ask for a progress report in March.

“I sincerely hope when we see each other again in March that you walk in from the public benches and are not appearing from custody.

“I will allow this order to continue, and hope that I am dealing with no more offending.”
