Keep on moving, Renfrewshire
Keeping older people moving is more important than ever during the coronavirus lockdown.
The Paisley Daily Express continues to bring you a simple exercise you can do in the comfort of your own home.
It is led by nurse Clare Robertson, pictured, who is a trained Otago leader and has been volunteering with Roar since 2013.
She’s worked on Roar’s falls prevention project, which encourages older adults to keep moving.
Today’s exercise is neck movements.
Neck movements are very important for mobilising the neck joints and helping with your posture by maintaining the length of the spine.
They are also good for alleviating tension from your neck and shoulder muscles.
They can be done in the sitting or standing position.
You can do it any time and in any room in your house.
Looking in the mirror may help you see if you are doing it right and it will make you smile.
Firstly, if you are sitting in the chair, come forward, so you are not leaning back, remember your posture by sitting upright.
If you are standing, have a support in front of you – either a chair, table or work surface
Stand or sit with legs hip width apart and hands by your side, or hold the chair
Place two fingers on your chin and gently guide the chin back, do not move your head up or down just your chin back until you feel a stretch at the back of your neck and you are showing off that lovely double chin. Bring your chin back to the normal position.
Repeat five times
If you feel like a turkey, you are doing it right.
