CLUB OF THE WEEK
St Peter’s Netball Club
This week’s Club of the Week is St Peter’s Netball Club.
We caught up with the Paisley team’s media manager Rhona Barnes to learn more about the club since its inception four years ago.
Tell us a bit about the history and background of the club.
St Peter’s Netball Club was established by Kellie Deans and Lorna Rose in 2016 with the aim of giving girls across Renfrewshire the opportunity to take part in a team sport and develop the sport of netball.
How many players does your club have?
Currently we have more than 100 girls in the club, ranging from P3 to S4.
Tell us about the leagues you compete in
We currently have Under-13 and Under-15 teams competing in the East Renfrewshire League and an Under-15 team competing in the Glasgow Netball Association Development League.
We also compete in various tournaments throughout the year for all age groups.
For the first time in the club’s history an Under-13 and Under-15 team were entered into the Scottish Cup this season.
We also have girls representing the club at Under-15 District level playing in tournaments throughout the year.
Is there a social aspect to the club as well as a sporting side?
The club brings together girls from all over Renfrewshire which leads to many friendships being formed.
As a club we take all the girls to see the Scottish professional netball team Strathclyde Sirens along with our presentation night.
What principles do the club represent and promote?
St Peter’s Netball Club is about inclusion, giving girls of all abilities somewhere to come and learn to play netball whether its competitively or recreational.
The girls don’t just develop netball skills, they make friends, work on their fitness, learn the importance of teamwork and develop good communication skills – all of which are transferable in life.
Are there any particular difficulties the club faces?
Following the success of the England National Netball team, the sport’s popularity has continued to grow with the biggest challenge now keeping up with demand.
The coaching team has grown over the years to six to support the demand for girls attending training and the amount of competitions the club are involved in.
How can people get involved with the club?
If anyone is looking to give netball a try or has had a taste of the sport at school contact us at stpetersnetballclub2016@ gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook.
