Tributes paid to community champ Hugh after his sudden death
Former police officer and Roar workerwill be sadly missed
A respected former policeman and community wo r k e r has died suddenly.
Married dad- of- two Hugh Young, from Paisley, suffered a heart attack. He was 55.
He was most recently a project worker with older people’s organisation Roar Connections for Life.
He was previously a police sergeant based in Paisley and Renfrew.
An elder at Stow Brae Kirk, he was also active in the 15th Paisley Boys’ Brigade, an organisation he had been involved in from the age of eight.
Jan Phillips paid tribute to her brother.
She said: “He was a very kind and caring person who worked tirelessly both for young people and the older age group as well.”
A former pupil of Langcraigs
Primary and Stanely Green High School, Hugh became a police cadet at the age of 16.
His sister Jan said: “He joined the regulars in January 1983 and then he served in Renfrew Police office first of all
“He moved into traffic and then was involved in force intelligence in traffic until he retired seven years ago.”
It was after his retirement that Hugh became involved with Roar.
“He volunteered with them initially,” Jan said.
“Latterly, he was employed with them.”
At the BB, Hugh was lieutenant in charge of company section at 15th Paisley.
He was also the company section activities convener at battalion level.
“For a number of years, he had been working across all of the competitions with the boys,” Jan added.
Roar paid tribute to Hugh on its Facebook page.
A message reads: “All of us who were lucky enough to know and work with him will miss him tremendously.
“It is an honour and privilege that he chose to have his second career with us.
“Roar will never be quite the same without him and our heartfelt sympathy goes to all his family.”
Hugh is survived by wife Ina, son Alan and daughter Pamela.
The details of his funeral have yet to be announced.
