NHS EMAIL SCAM ALERT
HOAX CASH APPEAL FLOODS INBOXES
An email scam claiming to raise cash for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic is doing the rounds in Renfrewshire, police have warned.
Police Scotland is urging people to delete the dodgy email to avoid being stung by cruel online fraudsters trying to take advantage of the Covid-19 crisis.
People have been receiving an email that appears to have been sent by either the government or the NHS looking for donations to help fight the deadly disease.
Chief Inspector Jim Cast, area commander for Renfrewshire, called on people to ignore the message and protect themselves online.
He said: “We’re aware of an email scam going around that appears as if it’s from the government and NHS, asking for charitable donations to help fund their efforts.
“Criminals will use any opportunity they can to defraud the public out of money, often impersonating professional and legitimate organisations.:
He added: “Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into donating money, and never make donations by cash or gift card, or send money through transfer agents, such as Western Union or Moneygram.
“Be sceptical if you receive an email, text or WhatsApp in relation to coronavirus, and never click on any attachments or links.
“Never provide personal data, such as your full name, address and date of birth – scammers can use this information to steal your identity.”
The force said that scammers will try to make the most of the crisis in a bid to target some of the most vulnerable people in society.
Last week, officers also warned that scammers had been going door to door targeting elderly people in their homes.
They have asked neighbours and friends to keep an eye any one who may be at risk and report any suspicious behaviour to the police
