TRAPPED ... AND TERRIFIED

Lockdown triggers rise in domestic abuse reports Women’s Aid fear victims can’t get away from partner to call for help

TENSIONS HEIGHTEN DURING COVID-19 CRISIS

Domestic abuse complaints in Renfrewshire have risen amid the Covid-19 lockdown.

Renfrewshire Women’s Aid has reported an increase in calls from victims reporting incidents of violence or abuse in their homes.

The vital support group said social distancing and stay-at-home precautions during the coronavirus pandemic have been triggering a rise in the number of victims coming forward.

Angela Sweeney, from Renfrewshire Women’s Aid, said: “We are noticing an increase in the number of new referrals from women during the lockdown period.

“Domestic abuse can take place in the community at any time, but there has been a rise in complaints over the past few weeks.

“In many cases, it can be difficult for victims to actually report incidents because the perpetrator may be in the house while they are trying to access our services, such as using their phone to make a call.

“But we want to stress that we are here for them, and we want victims to come forward and contact us, especially during a time when they may feel they are trapped or unable to because they are in the same property as the perpetrator.”

She explained that they are unable to measure the exact scale of the increase in cries for help because the office, based in Paisley’s

Violet Street, has been closed during the virus outbreak.

With staff members all working from home, they have not been able to collate statistics, but they are still in touch with victims, and working with other agencies, such as the police, Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Women’s Aid.

Angela added: “Even though the office is unavailable and workers won’t be available in person, we are still in telephone contact during office hours.

“And our work is continuing during this period and we will carry on supporting those in need.

“It is important that victims know we are still here for them and they do not need to suffer while the lockdown continues.

“No one should ever have suffer domestic abuse and we urge them to get in touch.”

The group added that any woman in danger or fear for her safety should contact police immediately.

Meanwhile, the UK-wide National Domestic Abuse helpline has witnessed a 25 per cent increase in calls and online requests for help since the lockdown.

Refuge workers have been warning Covid- 19 restrictions have been heightening tensions in the household and may even cut off escape routes for victims.

Last year, there were more than 2,000 reports of domestic abuse in Renfrewshire – which anti-violence campaigners said are just the “tip of the iceberg”.
