’Lie will hit the ground running

Focus on fitness will keep players in shape for return

- RON MOORE

Ar thurlie boss George Fotheringham is confident his players will be fighting fit when they eventually return to the pitch.

The ‘Lie gaffer revealed the squad has been focused on keeping in shape during the shutdown, following fixtures being pulled last month.

He added that club staff, management and the playing squad are taking a pay holiday to help the club stay afloat.

George said: “There has not been a lot going on for anyone at the club during the lockdown.

“The players, management and staff have not been take any wages and that is until the end of season.

“Without any games during this shutdown, the focus has been for players to keep fit, keep exercising, keep in shape and that is hard just now.

“The government allows you to have an hour of exercise a day.

“But I am sure everybody is taking it. “All the players are good lads and they know how to look after themselves, so I have no worries on that front.”

He believes Lie’s playing squad has done well this season, given they are sixth place in the West Region Championship.

However, the club is still in the dark about what will happen to the remaining games of the season, and whether SFA junior football bosses will call an end to it.

He added the club, along many junior sides, have applied to join the new pyramid structure, but news on that front has not been circulated.

The deadline apply passed last week, having been extended by a week from March 31 because of the Covid-19 crisis.

George said: “Ending the season now might make sense for some mid-table clubs, like ourselves.

“But I’m not sure it would be right for sides such as Darvel, Cumbernauld or

Blantyre Vics.

“These sides have done well and ending the season might not be what they are looking for, considering things have been going good for them.”

They know how to look after themselves, so I have no worries George Fotheringham
