WATERS: PLAYING WITH SAINTS HAS BEEN A PRIVILEGE... I HOPE IT’S NOT OVER

On-loan ace thanks Buddies for Premiership experience

- BY KYLE GUNN

Calum Waters hopes he hasn’t played his last game for St Mirren as the season is under threat due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kilmarnock loanee has played 31 times for the Buddies this season, as he looked gain some much-needed Premiership experience.

The 24-year-old reckons he’s already seeing the benefits from his time as a top team regular in Paisley.

He said: “It’s going to be so beneficial for me moving forward as that experience is what I’ve been needing to try and improve me as a player.

“You have got to be put in pressurised situations where you haven’t been before and figure out how to handle that.

“I think, over the course of the season, I have seen an improvement and made adjustments to my game.

“Hopefully, I haven’t played my last game for St Mirren, but, if I have, it’s been an absolute pleasure.

“Everyone at the club has been fantastic and the fans have been brilliant, they have followed us all around the country through the good times and the bad.

“I’m so appreciative of their words of support and I can’t thank them enough.”

Waters was as gutted as anyone to see the season suspended when it was, considering the Buddies had just beaten bottom of the table Hearts to go into ninth spot.

In fact, he’s missing the game so much, he’s playing it on a console.

But, if his time in the stripes has come to an end, then he would look back to a debut win at home against Aberdeen in August for his highlight.

He added: “I was so disappointed to see it stopped, especially when there was only eight games to go.

“You always get that buzz for the run in towards the end of the season.

“The fact we had that massive win against Hearts and we didn’t get a chance to follow that up was a bit gutting.

“Although we did have a long injury list after that game, so, if the league is to restart, we would have a good few bodies back fit.

“I have a Shih Tzu called Milly, so I have been walking her more than ever just now.

“I have just been training most days of the week and doing some gym work.

“There is really nothing else to do, so it’s good as it gets me out of the house for a couple hours.

“Also, me and my mates have being playing pro clubs on FIFA, although they’re not very good, so I’m having to carry them most games.

“A personal highlight would be my first game against Aberdeen when we beat them 1-0 at home.

“The stadium was packed and we put in a great display. I quickly found out how big the club was.

“Another highlight would be the away win against Hamilton as the away fans always travel in great numbers.

“When Cammy score,d it was unreal and we were also away on our Christmas night out after that game – it was a lively dressing room afterwards.”
