David van Zanten replaced the injured Naismith after 66 minutes, before Goodwin entered the notebook two minutes later for a foul on TaylorSinc­lair.

O’Donnell was sent for an early bath after 70 minutes, manhandlin­g McGinn as he burst forward, earning the rightback his second caution of the day, followed by red.

Saints, though, made it 2-0, after 72 minutes, when Newton latched on to

McGowan’s threaded pass and slipped the ball under the onrushing Fox.

McGinn flicked a shot wide after the youngster picked up Newton’s cross from the right, before Danny Grainger replaced McGowan, with five minutes remaining.

Into injury time, and Thompson made it 3-0, latching on to Grainger’s pass, while Osbourne slipped at the crucial moment, allowing the Saints striker the time and space to pick his spot from 14 yards.
