Burgh boss McKim hails ‘brilliant’ Burgh as side bags league title
Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim hailed being crowned league champions as being “just what the club deserves,” following a “truly brilliant season”.
The Keanie Park boss praised his squad’s amazing run of 13 wins from 14 matches to snatch the title flag for Burgh.
Jamie revealed how the club’s achievement of being awarded the McBookie.com West Region League Two title was only a fair reward, given the work the players have put in over the last nine months.
SFA bosses handed Burgh the flag based on their fifth league position and points per game average, after ending the football season because of the
Covid-19 crisis.
He said: “We have had a really good season. The team has been really strong. They have played so well.
“So it is just what the club deserves following a truly brilliant season.
“The work the players have put in over the last nine months has really paid off. So it’s great to end the season as champions, as the players really deserve it.
“To have 39 points out of 42, with ten games in hand, is a strong record.”
Jamie added even though Johnstone Burgh have made history in the 2019-20 season, the victory is still bittersweet, as they didn’t get to continue their blistering performance on the pitch.
He said: “We won it, but we would have preferred to win it differently.
“We missed out on the opportunity to carry on our form against other sides.
“There were other games we were looking forward to.
“We were confident we would have caught other teams, given the strength of our performances.”
Jamie said the achievement has brought a sense of optimism to the Renfrewshire club, which has joined the new pyramid league setup.
However, where the club will fit in has not been decided by league bosses.
He said: “We are waiting on news on where we will be in the new league setup and that is important as it will decide our signing targets for next season.
“There is to be a conference next week and I am hoping the club will have a say in how the new setup will work.”
Burgh have joined 67 out of 68 Junior clubs in the West Region in making the switch to the new setup in the tier six league, which begins next season.
