Scottish Greens MSP Ross Greer has praised the overwhelming majority of people in Renfrewshire for complying with the emergency regulations to stay at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

New Police Scotland figures reveal how many times officers have used emergency powers in the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Division.

These show that the overwhelming majority of people are complying with regulations.

Ho w e v e r, Po l i c e Scotland did note that in the Renfewshire and Inverclyde area, 250people were dispersed after being informed by police, 238 were dispersed after being instructed, 165 fixed penalty notices were issued, three people were returned home using reasonable force and five arrests were made

Mr Greer said: “It’s good to see the overwhelming majority of people in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde respecting these emergency regulations, which are designed to keep us all safe.

“The current situation is strange, and we’re all being asked to act differently but the sense of community that has come to the fore in recent weeks has been remarkable and I thank everyone who is saving lives by follsowing the advice and staying at home.

“These are new powers given to the police to deal with those acting dangerously during this unprecedented emergency.

“The regulations aren’t perfect and the Greens have proposed changes, for example to make clear that mental health is just as much of a justification as physical health for leaving your home.

“Overall though, it is essential that we all stick to the rules as they’ve been set out, to protect the NHS and save lives.”
