Two care home workers brought a smile to residents’ faces by braving a head shave.

Nursing sister Andrea Kyle and care assistant Wilma Johnston work at Lancefield Care Home, in Johnstone, and were joking about how they are missing their visits to the hairdresser because of the Covid-19 lockdown.

That soon morphed into them agreeing to a sponsored head shave – with all donations going towards a garden party for residents once the lockdown is lifted.

Andrea, 43, said: “We both have shortish hair and we were talking about needing it cut and trying to do something for the residents who are going through so much at the moment.

“We decided we would shave it off and have a bit of a party for the residents while we’re doing it. It just snowballed from there!”

So far, Andrea and Wilma have raised more than £1,150 from their own family and friends as well as residents’ families.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have raised so much,” said Wilma. “Our residents are frail and have dementia and they don’t understand why they aren’t seeing their families.

“We’re very fortunate we’ve not had any coronavirus cases in the home but we’re not being complacent, we know it can come at any time.

“We wanted to give the residents and their families something to look forward to.”

Andrea and Wilma, 60, and their colleagues played music and had a bit of a party while they were getting their extreme haircuts.

They added: “We made a wee afternoon of it, everyone enjoyed it. If we get something for the residents at the end of all this then it will have been worth it. We’re always covered in PPE and we’re hearing about all these deaths in care homes and people are panicking.

“We wanted this to be a bit of fun for everyone.”

Anyone who’d like to donate to the residents’ fund can contact the home on 01505 337 577.
