ELLYS LOVES TO PIPE UP AND SALUTE OUR HEROES

Schoolgirl plays pipes every Thursday to honour carers

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A talented schoolgirl has been leading her street’s weekly tribute to carers on her bagpipes.

Ellys MacLeod, 11, was inspired to pipe for NHS heroes by her grandparents who have been supported by the health service.

Her proud mum Cheryl said she has been lifting her Renfrew neighbours’ spirits after deciding she wanted to give something back.

She said: “She has really been missing her grandparents during lockdown.

“One of her grandmothers is recovering from cancer and the other has COPD.

“She was inspired, I think, by them and wanting to do something for them and to keep them in mind.

“One of the tasks she was given from school was to write a letter to someone she is missing and she chose her granny.”

Millions of people have been lining the streets of the UK on Thursday nights for the Clap for Carers and NHS workers in a show of appreciation for all they are doing during the Covid- 19 outbreak.

For Ellys it has become a focal point of the week.

Cheryl said: “She really looks forward to Thursday nights now, it has become a bit of an event that the week builds up to.

“Especially just now, obviously when there isn’t much else for kids to do, she really is really excited about it.

“All the neighbours and people around about really enjoy it.

“She played Happy Birthday to Captain Tom Moore last week and made a sign.”

The Kirklandneuk Primary School P7 pupil has made great progress with her instrument during the quarantine period according to mum Cheryl.

She added: “She has only been playing the pipes for about a year and a half and only got her own pipes in November.

“She has got a lot better during lockdown because she has been practising loads.

“I think she will keep doing it because she really enjoys it.”
