Curves girls go the extra mile for NHS

- EDEL KENEALY

Buddies are swapping the gym for the great outdoors as they pledge to walk, run or cycle 5K a day for the month of May.

The women, members of Curves Paisley, are taking on the challenge in a bid raise funds for NHS Charities.

The gym on Silk Street has 316 members, many of whom are aiming to conquer the 155 kilometre distance in 31 days.

Even those who are being asked to stay at home for health reasons have pledged to complete 5,000 steps every day from their comfort of their own homes and gardens.

Siobhan Kavanagh, who owns the Curves clubs in Paisley and Irvine, said she is incredibly proud of her two clubs and Curves UK for getting behind the initiative.

She told the Express: “We wanted to do something to raise money and give back to the NHS charities during this time.

“We came up with the idea of doing 5K a day for May. This is either 5K in distance by walking, running or cycling, or 5000 steps a day for every day in May.

“Our members have embraced this idea, along with Curves UK and we now have over 500 women across the UK taking part in this challenge.

“We have raised over £2000 so far and we are only five days in which is amazing!”

Siobhan added: “We would love it if you were able to donate anything big or small to our incredible NHS who are doing an amazing job during this very challenging time.”

Curves Paisley and Irvine closed their doors in March after the UK Government ordered all gyms to close in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Staff at the gyms - led by managers Jen Watt and Natalie Mackinnon - are however continuing to support members to stay active and are hosting a range of classes over the internet including circuits, strength and stretch classes.
