McLean brought out a decent save from MacDonald, with a left-foot shot from 18 yards, after Magennis played him in.

Newton left the field to a good ovation in what is probably his final appearance for Saints, McGinn replacing the on-loan Geordie ace, before Magennis glanced wide a cross from sub Paul McGowan.

Midfield playmaker McGowan headed an effort on to the roof of the net, afte Magennis glanced on McGregor’s free kick into the box.

Then McGinn drove low and into the arms of MacDonald with time running out, before Dilo saved brilliantl­y from Paterson’s header into time added on clawing it away with his right hand.

At the death, David van Zanten had hi swan song, replacing Naismith in wha could be his last ever appearance as a S Mirren player.
