Duo’s lockdown treats help hospice

- CARLA TALBOT

Two thoughtful school pals have raised more than £400 for a Paisley charity by supplying their neighbours with some lockdown treats.

Grace Lees, nine, and six- year- old Anna Meikle were inspired by all the fundraisers for the NHS during the coronavirus crisis and decided they wanted to hold their own.

The West Primary pupils thought they should raise money for a local cause and picked Paisley’s Accord Hospice.

Both girls got to work to raise the cash by washing neighbours’ cars, putting up posters in the street, and holding a bake sale in The Moorings estate where they both live.

And their efforts helped raised an impressive £435 for the charity, which provides palliative care for people in Renfrewshire.

Grace’s mum Lynette Lees said the girls were delighted to raise so much money thanks to kind donations from those living in the street.

She said: “The girls had seen all the fantastic fundraisers being done such as Tom Moore, who raised £20million for the NHS, and they thought they would like to do something to help a local charity.

“They had a think about what they could do and they decided to put on a social distancing bake sale.

“It was great for them to do this and we were delighted to raise as much as wee did.

“It also helped them think about the current circumstances and how to do things safely.

“All the cakes were individually wrapped and only one person was allowed in the tent at all times to maintain social distancing.

“They did really well and they did it all by themselves.”

Both youngsters were blown away by the response from the community, and Lynette feared the bake sale would run out of cakes too quickly as it was so popular

Primary five pupil Grace and P1 pupil Anna were kept busy all day as people kept turning up while out on their daily walks in the community.

The response was so great, that all the neighbours hope to have a big street party once the lockdown is lifted.

Lynette added: “People were so generous.

“The girls had put posters up around the street and so many people said they saw them and that’s why they came along.

“I was a great show of community spirit and we have all been talking about celebrating once this is all over.

“We’re going to have a big party together.”
