Virus warning over discarded plastic gloves

-

People dropping plastic gloves on to pavements in Paisley are being warned they are increasing the risk of coronavirus spreading in their communities.

Several pairs of gloves, worn by people to protect themselves from the virus while shopping, on public transport and while out walking, have been ditched in the streets around Foxbar.

The gloves are, according to local councillor Stephen Burns, are not only causing a litter problem, but a public health problem too.

Councillor Burns, who represents the Paisley Southwest ward, told the Express: “Myself and councillor Lorraine Cameron have had several complaints about these people who are walking their dogs and going to the shops and then just flinging these gloves all over the streets.

“I am not sure if they are getting off the bus and flinging them away, but whatever the reason it is irresponsible.

“Myself and Councillor Cameron want to urge members of the community to put these gloves and all rubbish in the public bins, or to take them home with them.

“Th e s e p e o p l e a re putting other residents and Renfrewshire Council staff - who have to kick these gloves up - at risk.”

Councillor Burns praised members of the waste collection and street cleaning teams at the local authority for their hard work throughout the current crisis, stating staff had responded quickly and removed discarded gloves and other rubbish as soon as it was reported.
