WE WANT ’TON TO BE DOWN AMONGST THE BIG BOYS

Neilston boss aims for Premiership promotion

- BEN RAMAGE

Neilston Juniors boss Chris Cameron is targeting a title and promotion to the top table when football returns to Brig O’Lea stadium.

The Farmers Boys are the highest ranked side placed in the new West of Scotland League Conference C.

They know this presents them with a glorious shot to make it to the new junior top flight, with all conference winners guaranteed to earn at least one money spinning campaign with Scotland’s junior giants.

Cameron believes his side have the quality required after he fended off interest in his stars to keep the core of his squad together for next season.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for us, for sure,” he told Express Sport.

“We’ve got three or four teams from our division in with us but we finished the highest out of all of them so that does make us favourites for the title.

“The conferences are only around for one season, and only the winners will go into the Premiership before normal league tables return so it gives us a great chance to be amongst the big boys if we can win our division.

“We’ve signed 14 boys from our squad last year which is massive.

“We’ve had a lot of offers from Premiership teams but we’ve managed to keep them at bay which gives me confidence.

“We’re looking at other signings but we’re not in a rush because we’re in a really good position.

“If we’re bringing in boys now they need to be starters, we don’t need squad players because it’s already so strong.”

Despite still not being able to train as a group, Neilston have been busy off the pitch bringing in experienced goalkeeper Grant Hay from Rutherglen Glencairn,

They have also promoted exciting young wingers Connor Bolger and Robert Wilson from their youth set-up.

Cameron added: “We’ve tried to sign three or four players but they’ve had offers from Premiership teams we just can’t compete with. I don’t blame them for taking them instead.

“We’re in talks with six or seven other players and I would expect to see three new faces in at least before the new season starts.

“Hay is an excellent option in goals and I’m excited to see how Bolger and Wilson progress.

“They’re exiting talents who I hope will keep improving in the main squad.”
