CLUB PITCHES IN TO HELP THE NEEDY

LANGCRAIGS AFC GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

- BEN RAMAGE

A Paisley football club president is giving back to the community after a coronavirus scare in his own home.

David Reid, who runs Langcraigs AFC, recently had to self isolate for 14 days after his wife Corinne tested positive for Covid-19.

While she has made a full recovery and has now returned to work, David is doing his utmost to help others who are having to remain shut in their homes after experiencing it firsthand.

He said: “We ,as a club, are doing all we can to help those who might be struggling with feeling isolated.

“Some kids have been stuck in a flat for weeks which I know from experience now can be very tricky mentally.

“My wife Corinne works in a care home and she tested positive for Covid and had to self-isolate.

“Thankfully, she didn’t have any symptoms, but obviously I had to stay in the house as well. It was really tough mentally.

“You get so used to being able to go outside, walk the dog, exercise. Just simple things we’ve always taken for granted.

“I really do feel for older people and those with health problems that mean they can’t go out at all.

“It’s horrible to be so restricted and cut off from the outside world. It’s only natural to feel lonely, especially if you live alone and have to deal with this as well.”

David, who has been club president for ten years, is now determined to do all he can to help vulnerable people facing lockdown.

This has seen Langcraigs put some of their funds towards breakfast packs from Elderslie Butchers to donate to Paisley’s STAR Project, as well as gifting doughnuts to care homes and footballs to the St Mi r ren FC Charitable Foundation.

He added: “We spoke, as a club, about what we could do to help because we feel everyone needs to pull together at the moment.

“The care homes have had a bit of a time of it so we’ve handed hundreds of doughnuts out to several local ones, just to try and make a wee difference.

“Elderslie Butchers struck us a good deal when they learned why we were buying the breakfast packs so we’ve handed them over to STAR to hand out to those who need it most.

“We’ve also donated 50 footballs to St Mirren’s charity because they’re doing a lot of online things for kids but some of them don’t have their own ball or cones to carry out the drills.

“We’re just trying to put a bit back into the local community because we’ve got to protect people. My wife had no symptoms and that just shows how easily it can be spread.

“We have to support those who are self- isolating and it’s heartwarming to see so many helping local foodbanks and supporting the NHS.”
