Saints first vital win is in the bag

MIRREN MATCHES AS THEY WERE REPORTED AT THE TIME Hunger for victory is key to Buddies’ superb result

Three minutes after that goal, Conroy made a run into a scoring position but Kelly made a timely intervention.

It was nearly two on 13 minutes, but Thompson’s shot was parried by keeper Robbie Thomson before the ball was scrambled clear.

Queens tried to get the pressure back on but Saints were well organised and did not let them settle.

St Mirren grabbed their second goal, on 29 minutes, putting them in a great position.

Unlike in the Livingston games, they had built on their lead and it was down to perseverance from Thompson.

Andy Dowie looked in control after Goodwin’s high ball, but Thompson nipped in behind him and shot home.

Thommo enjoyed his goal celebration and ran 60 yards down the field to celebrate in front of the Saints fans.

Three minutes before the break, Kelly’s pass sent Paul McMullan racing into

Star Saint:

Andy Webster

Webster was a rock at the heart of the St Mirren defence. Queens tried to pile the pressure on but the experienced centre half dealt with everything very well. On this evidence he will be a great signing.

Although the on-loan Celtic attacker did a lot right, his shot that beat the keeper lacked power and Jordan Marshall cleared off the line.

Ordinarily, that would probably have killed the game off, but it had been an excellent first half from St Mirren.

On 50 minutes, Agnew found Calum Gallacher with a great pass, but the keeper made a fine save with his feet.

Fowler’s side managed to get some

decent pressure on Saints in the last half hour as they tried to save the game.

But St Mirren defended well and Jamie Langfield dealt with anything that came his way.

St Mirren also continued to enjoy a serious threat going forward throughout the second half.

Queens best chance came in the last minute, with sub Paul Heffernan having his close-range shot blocked by Langfield’s feet.
