Six-year-old boy breaks his leg after motorbike accident

Road safety warning after child stepped out on road

- DAVID CAMPBELL

Police have issued a road safety warning after a six year- old boy suffered a broken leg when he stepped out in front of a motorbike.

The youngster was injured when he collided with the bike in Greenend Avenue, Johnstone, on Monday.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at around 5.30pm and rushed the injured boy to the Royal Hospital for Children in

Glasgow for treatment.

Police probing the incident said it appears to have been an unfortunate accident and the driver will face no further action.

However, officers will now step up road safety work in the area in a bid to keep youngsters safe, particularly when they return to school in August.

Chief Inspector Jim Cast, area commander for Johnstone, Renfrew and the villages, said officers would be attending local schools to offer road safety advice.

He said: “In this instance, it appears that was a very unfortunate accident whereby the boy has stepped out in to the roadway having not seen the motorbike.

“He suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for treatment.

“After a thorough investigation, it was determined the driver was not a fault.”

He added: “Road safety is a priority for my officers and we will continue to carry out work in this area.

“Over the last few weeks we have had officers deployed across the region carrying out speed checks on an almost daily basis.

“I would urge anyone who believes there is a problem in a particular street or area to get in touch on 101.

“When the schools return we will be carrying out visits to offer advice and educate young people about how stay safe near roads.

“A large part of our work is community engagement and that work can save lives.”
