Fence will help keep kids out of danger at electrical substation
A councillor has praised energy bosses for taking steps to make their electrical substations safer to prevent children from gaining access.
Councillor Stephen Burns has previously raised concerns following reports from residents that children had been climbing into the electrical station in Foxbar Road.
The Paisley Southwest councillor called on SP Energy Networks to install further security measures at the site.
However, after his original request was overlooked in November last year, he contacted energy bosses again and was delighted to see extra security measures introduced within days.
Councillor Burns has praised the energy giant for installing a fence on the wall of the substation to prevent access.
He said: “I had written to SP Energy
Networks last November and was told the area would be made safer but nothing was done until I sent a further letter explaining that there was a real safety concern for children in the area.
“Myself and Councillor Lorraine Cameron - who supported my request to SP Energy Networks - are pleased the area is now safer to stop kids entering this area as it is on the route they walk to school.
“A number of constituents had been in touch with me to tell me that they have spotted children climbing the fence and cutting through it on their way to school.
“I am delighted they have now enhanced additional security measures to keep kids out of this area.
“Thank you to SP Energy Networks for listening to the community’s concerns by providing additional security at this site within days of been contacted further.”
A spokeswoman for SP Energy Networks said: “The safety and security of our electricity substations is really important both in terms of keeping the public safe and keeping the power flowing to local homes and businesses. A recent substation fire in Paisley is a stark reminder of this.
“We always listen to feedback from our local communities and respond to any issues that could impact on our network – we appreciate Councillor Burns bringing this matter to our attention.”
