Tragic children’s grandad thanks mourners

-

The grandfather of three children who died in a Paisley house fire has thanked everyone who turned out to support the family on the day of their funeral.

Alex Gibson senior said he was “humbled” by the number of people who turned out to pay their respects as the funeral cortege made its way through Gallowhill on Thursday.

Fiona, Alexander James and Philip Gibson perished in a fire that engulfed their Renfrew Road home on June 26.

Mum Julie Daley, who was also injured in the fire, and dad Alex Gibson cried as they watched hundreds of Buddies line the streets to mourn the loss of the children aged 12, eight and five.

People followed the family’s wishes by wearing bright clothing and clapping softly as the three hearses made their way along Gallowhill Road, Netherhill Road and Marjory Drive.

Writing on community Facebook page Kids of Gallowhill, Mr Gibson said: “To all in Gallowhill, I am beyond humbled at the turnout of people to show their respect at Fiona Alexander and Philip’s funeral today. Thank you.”

A spokesman for the community Facebook page also said Gallowhill had done the children “proud”.

The siblings were rescued from the fire, which broke out at around 9pm on the Friday evening by firefighters who, upon arriving within minutes, found a well-developed fire in the first-floor cottage flat.

The children were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but sadly died a short time later.
