- DAVID CAMPBELL

Cops are hunting a yob who racially abused a taxi driver and refused to pay despite taking her on a wild goose chase to buy ciggies.

The lout hurled sickening insults at the 40- year- old cabbie after she dropped him at Robertson Gait, Paisley, in the early hours of Sunday.

She took the passenger to various garages throughout the town, including the BP in Ferguslie Main Road, so he could buy cigarettes.

However, when he arrived at his final destination in the Castlehead area of the town he turned on the frightened driver, hurling racist abuse at her.

He then refused to pay his fare and left the scene.

Enquires are now underway to identify the cruel thug.

The victim has been left distressed and frightened, officers probing the incident have said.

Chief Inspector Rhona Fraser, area commander for Paisley, said: “We are investigating after a male racially abused a 40-year-old female taxi driver in Paisley’s Roberston Gait in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“He also refused to pay his fare.

“Behaviour of this type is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The victim has been left distressed by the incident and it is important that we trace the individual responsible.

“Hate crimes have no place in our community and tackling them is a priority for my officers.

“If you have been the victim of a hate crime please report it to police. We will investigate fully.”

In a separate incident a 35-year-old man has been arrested over claims he made racist and violent threats against Post Office workers in Broomlands Street, Paisley.

It is alleged he made the threats while on the phone to police call handling staff around 4pm on Monday.

He was later traced and arrested over the alleged incident.

A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
