Gardeners are aiming to bring some flower power to the roads

- BEN RAMAGE

A determined community group are hoping to bring wild flower power to Erskine roads.

The green-fingered members of Erskine Community Garden have cleared a large verge on Kilpatrick Drive with the help of local volunteers.

Now they are preparing to sow Scottish wildflower seeds in a bid to brighten up the area.

Erskine Community Garden chair Heather Clissett believes the new project will have several benefits.

She said: “We started the garden around two years ago now and we thought we’d try and start planting wildflower seeds around the town so more people could see them.

“We’ve asked the council a few times but they were a bit reluctant at first, probably because they thought it would all become a bit messy.

“We recently got them to agree for us to trial it on a verge on Kilpatrick Drive, between the sports centre and Pandemonium Play Centre.

“Wildflowers take a lot longer to grow than normal flowers, so the difference won’t be obvious straight away.

“But once they’ve grown in it will a stunning spot, much nicer than just overgrown grass.

“It will save the council money in the long run as it’s less ground for them to manage, and the environmental benefit for wildlife like bees and butterflies will be huge too.

“Hopefully this is just the first of many we can plant around the town.”

The group received a helping hand from several volunteers, including Ian Hall - who owns GGM Landscape Services - to cut the grass as well as Erskine Morrisons community champion Elspeth Roxburgh who helped shift the cuttings.

Heather added: “I need to offer a big thanks to everyone who has helped us so far.

“It’s been a strange year for us due to lockdown but hopefully this marks the beginning of a brighter period for us all.

“The garden is still going strong and our fairy village and picnic benches are still very popular with lots of people coming to visit lately.”
