Caring supermarket makes it a double for two good causes

- EXPRESS REPORTER

Bosses at supermarket giant Morrisons have doubled the money raised by Ralston residents’ street bingo – meaning the grand total donated to two charities is £6,500.

Kindhearted Buddies in the Paisley suburb raised an incredible £3,250 playing weekly street bingo throughout lockdown.

The cash was donated to the Accord Hospice in Paisley and the Prince and Prince of Wales hospice in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow.

And now the Morrisons Foundation Team have agreed to double the money raised – meaning each hospice will be given an additional £1,625.

Roffey Park resident Helen Irvine, who was part of the trio who organized the event, submitted a Match Funding application to the supermarket.

Helen, who works at Morrisons in Falside, Paisley, discovered this week that her application had been successful.

She said: “I was quite tearful at the news. I was taken aback by the generosity of Morrisons.

“To think when we started the bingo we were hoping to raise £300 and we’ve now ended up with £6,500. It’s been incredible.

“Morrisons have been so supportive throughout. They donated numerous gifts which we were able to offer as prizes for the bingo and our weekly raffle.

“We are all hugely grateful for their generosity.”

Roffey Park residents enjoyed weekly street bingo after Helen set it up back in April, along with neighbours Tracey Coyle and Karen Macpherson.

Dozens of neighbours enjoyed playing every Thursday and joined in a grand finale event last month where pizzas were donated by Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns as well as food from takeaways Genova, Sherwood, Leonardo’s and Forno.

Indian takeaways Natural Spice, Two Fat Indians and Himalaya also donated.

Helen added: “It if wasn’t for the kindness of all our neighbours taking part every week, this would never have happened.

“It brought our community together and helped us all get through lockdown.”
