Road safety plea to parents as children return to school
Renfrewshire parents are being urged to teach their children to stay safe near roads as they return to school.
Most parents do not think their kids understand road safety well enough or concentrate properly when near roads, a new survey reveal has revealed.
Safety campaigners have urged parents to help children learn the Green Cross Code “as they would their spellings or times tables”.
In a survey by YouGov commissioned for Injury Prevention Week, which runs from until August 21, almost two-thirds of parents did not think their children had a good understanding of the dangers or concentrate near roads.
“One in eight parents went as far as to say they are very concerned about their children’s safety,” said Sam Elsby, president of APIL - a not- for-profit group for injured people which hosts Injury Prevention Week.
“The Highway Code states that children should not be allowed out alone until they can understand and use the Green Cross Code properly. So it is particularly important for those children who may be walking to school without a parent or guardian for the first time this term.
“I urge parents to be proactive this Injury Prevention Week. Support children in their knowledge and understanding as it is their best tool for avoiding harm on the roads.

“I never thought I’d manage to raise this much.
“I’ve been blown away by people’s generosity when times are so hard.
“It just shows that even in times of crisis and uncertainty people can still come together.
“I’m now sitting at £1,090 and I’m hoping to hit a new target of £1,200.
“I’d like to thank Roy Henderson and the staff at De Beers for hosting the event, Alfredo Nutini and his staff at Castelvecchi for providing pizza and Elizabeth Patton and Kirsty Scoular for shaving and waxing.
“I also need to say a huge thanks to my son Tom who makes me laugh and makes it all worth while.”
