So far so good...but let’s stay vigilant

- BY PAISLEY AND RENFREWSHIRE SOUTH MP MHAIRI BLACK

As lockdown restrictions ease further and we try to get back to some sort of reality we must stay vigilant as the Covid-19 virus is very much still the biggest threat to us in modern history.

We are doing a tremendous job of following the health advice and social distancing guidance that has been put in place by the Scottish Government here in Renfrewshire.

The recent outbreak and consequential restrictions put in place in Aberdeen are a stark reminder to anyone who wishes to go against the health advice that is currently in place that the current situation can flip on its head in an instant.

Over the past couple of months several polls have indicated that independence is now the favoured position of the people of Scotland and indeed the people of Renfrewshire.

It will be no surprise to any readers that this is music to my ears as a supporter and advocate of Scottish independence.

Less than a year ago voters across Renfrewshire voted in a general election for a proindependence candidate.

In that election I asked voters to vote for me firstly to continue representing the constituents of Paisley and Renfrewshire South and secondly to fight for Scotland’s right to choose our own future.

Predictably and arrogantly, this right has been denied yet again by Boris Johnson’s out of touch UK Government.

If there’s one thing I know about the people of Renfrewshire, it’s that we won’t be walked all over.

We will right this wrong and I believe that these ever increasing polls showing support for Scottish independence in this area are evidence of that.

The reality is that even if you don’t believe Scotland should be an independent country people should have that chance to express that opinion.

Since 2014 Scotland has voted SNP in countless elections, had austerity that we never voted for inflicted on us and we have been taken out of the European Union against our will.

The penny has dropped and continually refusing to accept that the majority of people in Scotland want an independence referendum is only making more people support an independent Scotland.

Support for independence was already rapidly increasing before Christmas when Boris Johnson and his crooked Cabinet tried to illegally push through a hard Brexit.

People still remember the Orwellian scenes of Boris Johnson surrounded by police officers proclaiming he would die in a ditch, people remember the smarmy Jacob Reece

Mogg sprawled across the front benches in the House of Commons and they won’t forget that in Scotland we didn’t vote for any of it.

The divergence in the handling of the global pandemic between our Scottish Government and the UK Government has been evident.

Nicola Sturgeon has acted as a leader throughout this pandemic and I feel safe knowing we have a First Minister that puts people’s health and well-being above all else.

You contrast this with how the UK Government have handled this pandemic and it is a nobrainer as to why opinion polls show people are putting their faith with the First Minister over the Prime Minister at this time.

The focus will begin to swiftly shift to the Scottish Parliament election next year.

Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP are predicted to be successful.

However, the moment that we become complacent is the moment we become just like our opponents.

Richard Leonard, the Labour leader, has been so out of touch with the electorate that it’s actually frightening.

The Conservatives have recently appointed Douglas Ross to lead them to victory at Holyrood while recently anointed Lord Ruth Davidson has been subbed in to do

First Minister’s questions as their new leader is an MP in Westminster.

It’s a bit of a mess to be honest. I know who I would rather have leading us as Renfrewshire recovers from coronavirus ... and it’s certainly not Richard Leonard or Douglas Ross.
