WING KING DYLAN JUMPS TO IT TO SIGN FOR SAINTS

BOSS GOODWIN HAILS IRISH ACE

- BEN RAMAGE

Jim Goodwin has raided the Irish market yet again after bringing former Wimbledon winger Dylan Connolly to St Mirren.

The 25-year-old joins on a oneyear deal after his contract with the English League One side expired.

Capped by Republic of Ireland at under-21 level, Connolly has also turned out for Ipswich Town and Bradford City and was swayed on a move after speaking to former Dundalk teammate and current Buddie Jamie McGrath.

As well as McGrath, Goodwin has also persuaded defender Conor McCarthy to make the switch from his home country to Paisley too during his tenure as manager.

Connolly told stmirren. com: “When the gaffer rang me it was his ambitions for the club that made me want to come and be a part of it.

“He told me about how he wanted to progress the club and do really well in the league.

“I spoke to Jamie McGrath and he sold me on the club.

“He’s really enjoying his time here and he’s only had good things to say which made the decision much easier.”

After signing striker Kristian Dennis last week, Saints boss Goodwin spoke about his desire to get one more attacking player into his squad for this season.

He has got his wish and feels that Connolly will bring excitement and pace that his side were missing last season.

He said: “Dylan is a good experienced player with out-andout pace and I feel that is something that we lack a little of in the team.

“The Irish market is one that I am very fortunate to have some really good contacts.

“Before I sign anyone I make a number of calls to people who have worked with the player in the past and I spoke to Jamie McGrath too and he said he was a great lad and a good character.

“I’m really looking to seeing him play and I think he will excite the fans.”

Connolly has featured for Bohemians, Shelbourne, Bray Wanderers and Dundalk in his native Ireland in his career so far.

He signed for Wimbledon in January 2019, before spending time on loan at League Two side Bradford City last season where he made nearly 30 appearances.
