Schools help Malawi pupils
A charity supported by several schools across Renfrewshire has raised £8,000 for schools in Malawi.
Classrooms for Malawi supports education programmes in the East African country and has raised the money to make sure schools have suitable hand washing facilities ready for when children return to school next month.
In order for schools to return in Malawi, they must have hand washing facilities in place but only 4.2 per cent of schools currently do.
Classrooms for Malawi raised £8,000 in just 30 days which will ensure the facilities are available in its 31 partner schools.
Chief executive of the Scottish charity, Amy Blake said:“The response to the campaign has been true testament to the spirit of global citizenship shown in Scotland.
“At a time when we have all been impacted by the effects of Covid-19 we are proud that this campaign has touched the hearts of so many.
“We have now distributed the handwashing stations to our partner schools which will support a safer return to school for the 30,000 children, helping prevent the spread of coronavirus and other preventable diseases.”
Headteacher Feggie Mphasi Mwale from Ngumbe School Community Day Secondary School in Blantyre, Malawi added:“Thank you to everyone that has donated so far.
“Your support will bring about better hygiene for our whole school community and will ensure less days of school are lost due to illnesses like coronavirus.”
