Cafe’s mission to serve up charity cash
Owners to host week-long birthday celebration
A family-run cafe will celebrate its first birthday by raising cash for a charity close to their hearts.
Scott’s Cafe, in St James’ Street, Paisley, will offer a host of money-raising dishes for Cancer Research UK.
Scott Begg, who runs the popular eatery with his mum Jackie, is offering a weeklong promotional menu in a bid to raise funds for the charity, which carries out life-saving research into several different types of cancer.
Jackie, whose mum, Barrhead woman Betty Carr, lost her battle with lung cancer, worked in a Cancer Research shop before leaving to run the cafe with Scott.
She said: “I worked with Cancer Research for 16 years and my mum and my grandmother both died from cancer, so it is something I have always been very passionate about.
“My son Scott started volunteering at Cancer Research when he was 13 at one of the shops, back when you were allowed under-16s. So, as a family, it has always been something that we have supported.
“We will be marking the cafe’s first birthday on Wednesday with balloons and banners and donating funds to the charity.
“We want to have a week of celebrating and will offer a roll and sausage at £1 or roll and potato scone for £1 and we will donate half of that to Cancer Research UK.”
Other promotions to mark the anniversary are also on offer, including 20 per cent off Just East orders over £15 and, for couples dining in, they will get their second meal at half price.
The fundraiser and promotions run from September 8 to 15 and aim to thank customers for their loyalty throughout what has been an incredibly difficult first year of business.
“We were open for takeaways only on Just Eat throughout lockdown,” Jackie said.
“We had seven or eight drivers delivering for us and we were inundated with orders.
“We want to thank people for supporting us throughout that difficult time.
“We have customers who used us throughout lockdown and are continuing to come back. We are grateful for that.”
She added: “We have continued to thrive throughout all this.
“We couldn’t have done that without our customers, so this is a thank you to them.”
The fundraiser is not the first charity event to be hosted by Scott’s Cafe.
The business launched an after-hours soup kitchen for the homeless last winter, collecting clothes and blankets to hand out alongside warm food.
It is hoped the weekly event will resume when lockdown restrictions allow.
