Car park land a snip at £7m

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

Wealthy bidders are being lined-up to buy a giant chunk of land to serve as more airport parking.

At the moment, it’s wasteland, overgrown with vegetation and trees.

But, with a capability of taking more than 1,000 cars, it has a target price of more than £7.65million.

The land in Linwood would be an investment for the future as air passenger volumes out of Glasgow – usually around nine million – have plunged.

At the height of the lockdown in June, numbers were down an astonishing 98 per cent.

The 10.7 acre site is triangular and bounded by the A737, Burnbrae Road and the Old Patrick Water.

It’s near the existing Skyport parking operation on Burnbrae Drive and is two-and-a-half miles from the airport.

A closing date of later this month has now been set for the land sale - with a price equivalent to £715,000 an acre.

By comparison, the average price of farmland in Scotland is around £4,300 an acre.

The sellers claim the Linwood site can benefit from the proposed £300m expansion of the airport.

Planning permission exists for 1,046 cars and agent Falconer Property said: “The land is on the western side of Burnbrae Road close to its junction with Burnbrae Drive and benefitting from frontage onto the A737.

“It is highly accessible from Glasgow and Inverclyde via the M8 motorway and from Ayrshire via the A737. It is in close proximity to Glasgow Airport.”

The airport itself has a long and two short stay car parks right on the Abbotsinch plot.

But private operators have sprung up beside the M8 or A737 including Park ‘N Fly, Parksafe, Direct Parking and Skyport.

Falconer Property has set a closing date of September 25 for bids with an offers over price of £7.65m.

It is highly accessible from Glasgow and Inverclyde via the M8 motorway and from Ayrshire
