A Paisley Pirates stalwart proved over lockdown that he is definitely one of the club’s good guys.

Having not played competitive ice hockey since February, Martyn Guy still wanted to put his best foot forward and do something productive with his time off the skates.

The club’s assistant captain, who celebrated 10 years as a Pirate during the season cut short by Covid-19, decided to help a much-loved charity boost its funds and help youngsters suffering from a life threatening condition.

Guy was regularly spotted in Paisley streets as he clocked up over 100 miles during the month of August to raise more than £1,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Despite facing the usual Scottish summer mix of hail, sunshine and occasional heatwaves, he ran most nights of the month after his work to coin in much needed funds for the trust.

“It’s a charity quite close to my heart,” Guy explained.

“Normally at this time of the year I’m getting my fitness up in anticipation of the new ice hockey season, so it seemed an ideal opportunity to work on it and raise money for the very best of causes at the same time.

“I certainly know the area where I stay a lot better than I used to. I didn’t do ridiculous amounts of miles on any given night so it maybe wasn’t just as tough as I thought it might be.

“Although on some nights my feet certainly enjoyed the rest when I got home!”

Pirates operations manager Jackie Turley revealed that everyone involved with the club was delighted with the efforts of the selfless fundraiser.

She said: “The club is certainly very proud of what Martyn has achieved, although we’re not really surprised at the scale of it .

“£1,000 raised is a significant sum in anyone’s language, but then he doesn’t go at anything with less than 100 per cent effort and enthusiasm which this has proved.

“He’s all action on the ice, and a very important part of the squad as his 10 years at the club demonstrate.

“We’re certainly hoping his personality and character remain with us for a while longer yet.”

Meanwhile, Paisley Pirates are anxiously awaiting the outcome of a Elite Ice Hockey League Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, September 15 to discover if there will be a Scottish season on the ice this year.

All involved with the club are hoping that they will be able to return to competitive action at Braehead Arena before 2021.
