Cashpot for community groups is unclaimed

Councillor is urging groups to get their thinking caps on

- STEPH BRAWN LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Village community groups are being urged to apply for grants from a £370,000 fund after it was revealed less than 10 per cent of the cash has been handed out.

Renfrewshire Council’s Villages Investment Fund was established two years ago and is aimed at projects that could help strengthen the identity of the region’s rural communities.

But, more than £ 330,000 from the pot is still sitting untouched, and villagers are now being asked to get their thinking caps on about projects that could benefit from a cash boost.

Natalie Don, who is a councillor for Bishopton and Bridge of Weir, said it is vital the ring- fenced money is used in full to ensure supporting Renfrewshire’s villages remains a priority for the council.

“As a councillor who represents villages, I know the passion people have within these areas and I know this is replicated across Renfrewshire,” said Councillor Don.

“The Village Investment Fund is an opportunity to take that passion and channel it into projects that could improve our villages.

“I know from contact with residents, there is a perception less money is spent on our villages than other places and this fund was created to prove that the villages are not being left behind.

“We need to utilise this funding to the maximum to ensure that this remains a priority.

“If you have an idea for something which could strengthen or highlight your area’s character, identity or heritage, please consider this funding.

“We already have some fantastic local groups in our communities that do amazing work for their areas.

“I am sure they would welcome innovative ideas from local residents.

“Let’s show some real community spirit.” Some examples of what the funding could be used for include signage and branding, heritage trails or walks which highlight points of interest, renovation or improvements to features within the area, art works or events.

Any voluntary group can apply for the cash, but residents are also being encouraged to think about projects which could be eligible.

Support can be given to residents who would like to start up their own project or, alternatively, they could pitch an idea to a local organisation who could then apply for funding to develop it.
