Jak was back
One of the most surprising things about St Mirren’s lack of chances created on Saturday afternoon was the amount of attacking players they had on the pitch.
Over the course of ninety minutes Goodwin fielded three strikers (Lee Erwin, Jon Obika and Junior Morias) and three wingers (Ilkay Durmus, Dylan Connolly, Kyle McAllister) as well as attacking midfielder Jamie McGrath.
Yet no combinations of these forwards managed to lay a glove on the visitors, with only Erwin’s first half header and Durmus’low strike threatening the Ayrshire side’s goal.
Obika found himself on the bench, with Goodwin deciding to go with one up top and handing the starting jersey to new signing Erwin.
But after a lacklustre first half, Obika was thrown into the fray with McAllister joining him late on as the hosts desperately looked for a spark in the final third.
Unfortunately for the Saints there was none to be found and Goodwin has a serious task on his hands to find out which set of attacking players gives the Paisley side their best chance of quickly getting back to winning ways.
That should become easier once he gets Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn, two of the club’s most creative and dangerous midfielders, back on the pitch next month.
