Two schools report more covid cases
More staff and children at two Renfrewshire high schools have tested positive for Covid-19, as health chiefs confirm youngsters may have caught the virus on campus.
Renfrewshire Council revealed more cases had been identified at St Andrew’s, in Paisley, after a person at the school tested positive for the virus on September 24.
Although all close contacts of the infected person were told to self-isolate, bosses say they are looking at the possibility of transmission of the virus within the Hawkhead site.
The local authority also confirmed yesterday that trace and protect officials were working with staff to identify close contacts of a second person who has tested positive for Covid-19 at Renfrew High.
This is, however, separate to an earlier case identified at the Haining Road campus on September 22.
A council spokesperson said: “There have been a small number of positive Covid-19 cases connected to St Andrew’s Academy over the past week and, as a result, test and protect contact tracing has been activated.
“We believe some of the cases are down to community transmission – ie where the virus has been contracted outwith school, and not necessarily passed on within it.
“At this stage, there is not enough evidence to say definitively there has been transmission in the school.
“We appreciate parents will have concerns, but can reassure them the safety of pupils and our staff is our biggest priority and all national guidance is being followed.
“With each case a detailed risk assessment is carried out by NHS public health experts and council staff – and the advice to St Andrew’s is robust control measures are in place and the school is safe for all other pupils and staff to attend as usual.”
