Roads chiefs ‘must do better’ at fixing consistent potholes

Councillor hits out at temporary repairs to crater

Roads bosses at Renfrewshire Council have come under fire for failing to fix a pothole which was reported almost a month ago.

The crater in Bridge of Weir was highlighted to officers on September 10 by Councillor James MacLaren, who represents the village.

But despite staff promising it would be permanently fixed, no action has yet been taken.

The pothole is located next to the Co-op store in Gryffe Grove - an estate which sits behind the Main Street shops and restaurants.

Councillor MacLaren insists the repairs which have been carried out on it in the past have only been temporary which has consistently led to the need for further work to be carried out.

He has now demanded officials set out a clear timetable for when it will be fixed after claiming his enquiry has been passed “from pillar to post”.

“Potholes continue to be one of the biggest issues that my constituents bring to my attention,” said Councillor MacLaren.

“This is an example of how Renfrewshire Council simply must do better when it comes to carrying out repairs.

“This simple request seems to have been passed from pillar to post and still no action has been taken weeks on from my initial correspondence.

“For too long, this pothole has only been repaired temporarily, now we must hear a date when this will be permanently repaired to give residents peace of mind.”

It’s not the first time this year the veteran councillor has pressed the issue of potholes in the area he represents.

Ahead of pupils returning schools in August, he highlighted craters in Bridge of Weir along the route to Gryffe High School - which is in neighbouring village Houston - and described potholes as a “perennial problem”.

A Renfrewshire Council spokeswoman said: “Our teams have been working hard to repair and resurface roads across Renfrewshire and we are awaiting an update from our contractor with a timescale for this repair.

“We have provided a record investment to maintain and improve our roads over the past five years and we are committed to ensuring they continue to be safe for motorists and cyclists in Renfrewshire.”

Residents can report potholes by using the council’s online form or call 0300 300 0300.
