We can’t keep Kickin’ On for now ... but we will keep talking

Brothers pledge to still be there for those most in need

Mental health support group Kickin’ On has vowed to continue helping members – despite the forced cancellation of sessions under new covid guidelines.

The organisation, which uses football as a vehicle to promote good mental health, insists it is determined to keep supporting those most in need.

Earlier this week, the Scottish Government announced further coronavirus restrictions, including a ban on contact sports and training amid rising case numbers.

However, Kickin’ On bosses say they are disappointed by the decision, fearing it could impact those who need regular support the most.

A spokesman for the Johnstone group said: “We are very disappointed.

“We have done everything we possibly could in terms of track and trace, temperature testing, masks when possible and hand sanitising.

“Over 500 have attended Kickin’ On since July and not one person has had coronavirus from the group.

“So, we feel that it puts yet more pressure on people who are already struggling.

“We don’t have to agree with a decision to respect and follow the rules set out.

“We have stopped all sporting activities, yet our talking groups will still go on as normal.

“Hopefully, we will be back to being fully operational soon.”

The group has pledged to keep its talking groups going during the imposed 16-day shutdown.

The spokesman added: “We had 22 people at our Talk, Talk, Talk group and it was an incredible night, so we will take the positive from the negative in that, yes, we can’t play indoor sports or play football, however, we can still have our talking groups and be there for people.”

The voluntary group has gone from strength to strength since it was founded in February by brothers David and Mark McKenna, who have both battled mental health problems.
