Arthurlie withdraw from WoS league season

-

Arthurlie look set to sit out the season after joining a number of West of Scotland League clubs deciding not to compete.

The new league body is still targeting a kick off this month despite the revelation that 14 clubs, including Arthurlie, plan to withdraw from the new set-up.

The majority of clubs have voted to go ahead with the current start date of October 24, despite fears of kicking off without fans and any further Covid-19 impact.

An Arthurlie statement, released on Sunday, read:“Under current matchday protocols set out by the WoSFL in conjunction with the Scottish FA and Scottish Government, spectators are not permitted to attend matches.

“With no clear evidence to suggest a change to these protocols is in sight, a fundamental consideration in the decision making process was the potential for a full season without spectators and the financial implications that would have for the club.

“Whilst it should be noted a financial compromise was possible between the players and the club, there are many other costs to be considered over and above the player’s weekly payments – utilities, training lets and match officials’expenses just to name a few.”

As well as the prospect of no gate receipts for an entire campaign, the strict rules surrounding dressing room and shower facilities also influenced the club’s decision.

The statement continued:“In a recent WoSFL survey, Arthurlie voted not to start the new season on October 24, in favour of pausing the season until restrictions were eased adequately, primarily to allow spectators to attend as well as dressing room and shower facilities being accessible.

“Whilst this was not a major stumbling block in our deliberations, it is far from an ideal situation and arguably unsafe.

“It was agreed the club should withdraw primarily, but not exclusively, due to the fact that no promotion would be achieveable even if we did participate.

“This is not withstanding the financial implications and general safety concerns.”
