BULLY WHO BURST MUM’S C-SECTION STITCHES IS JAILED

Girlfriend was attacked trying to care for newborn baby

- RON MOORE

A brute has been caged for a series of horror attacks on his partner - one of which burst her C-section stitches open.

Adam Gallagher, 35, pushed Charlene McGill onto a couch as she was tending to their newborn baby, causing her stitches to tear and bleed.

Yesterday, he was handed two years behind bars and will be closely watched by the authorities for another year after his release from jail.

Drug addict Gallagher appeared from custody at Paisley Sheri f f Court and was told the only appropriate punishment for him was imprisonment.

Sheriff James Spy told him: “With regard to your record and the nature of the offence, a custodial sentence is inevitable here.”

After studying background reports, Sheriff Spy added that a supervised release order for one year was necessary to protect the public.

He also ordered the thug to get help to address his “drugs,

alcohol, mental health and domestic violence issues”.

Gallagher pleaded guilty to two domestic abuse charges against Ms McGill during their tempestuous relationship.

He admitted assaulting her on two occasions, between March 2018 and March 2019, at properties in Johnstone and Paisley.

And he admitted being abusive to her between April 2019 and August 2020 in Paisley.

The court heard he carried out a string of physical assaults on his partner during their two- and- a- half year relationship.

Dur ing one attack, committed just days after she’d given birth, she was left with blood pouring from her caesarean wound.

In another assault on Ms McGill, Gallagher turned up in a taxi and punched her on the head so hard she saw flashes of light. He then fled into the waiting cab.

He also bit her on the head and body and poked her in the eyes, and repeatedly pushed her while shouting and swearing at her, and rained punches on her head and body.

He even contacted her from jail trying to get her to change her story in an attempt to be released from jail.

Defence agent Charlie McCusker said Gallagher was wracked with guilt over what he had done.

He said: “He has always accepted that what he did was wrong and he still knows he has done wrong.

“He does give an explanation that it was his alcohol and drugs problem, so he does have an awareness of what he was doing was wrong.

“He also understands the only option before your Lordship is to hand him a custodial sentence.”

Mr McCusker said the relationship with Ms McGill had ended and that Gallagher, who was blighted by a difficult upbringing, would benefit from supervision in the community when is released from jail.

Sheriff Spy told him he would have been sentenced to 30 months, but he reduced that to 24 months to take into account his plea of guilty at an early stage in the proceedings.

He added: “I will make a supervised release order for 12 months on your release for you to be supervised by the social work department.

“This will help address your drugs, alcohol, mental health and domestic violence issues.”
