Sector’s plea for workers
The boss of a hospitality business with a restaurant in Renfrewshire has urged people to consider a career in the sector.
Buzzworks Holdings chef director, Trevor Garden, believes that offering prosperous career opportunities and nurturing talent is the key to a thriving kitchen.
He’s spoken out amid reports of a recruitment crisis in the industry caused by repeated lockdowns.
Buzzworks Holdings runs a number of Scottish premises, including The Coach House in Bridge of Weir, which has vacancies for kitchen and front of house staff.
Trevor said: “It’s been an unusual and challenging year for our industry, but we’ve continued to engage with our people and everyone is delighted to be back with venues open again.
“However, with much of the hospitality industry having spent long periods on furlough and with time on their hands to reflect this year, there is definitely a trend of people looking to pursue dreams of monetising their hobbies and changing career paths.
“This, combined with Brexit uncertainty, has left a shortage of suitable candidates to fill positions in kitchens across the country, including our own venues.”
Trevor added: “The last year has been unsettling for many and with uncertainty still surrounding Brexit and how this will affect hospitality in the longer term, the industry must adapt its ways to ensure our burgeoning culinary scene continues where it left off in 2020.”
