Gerry heading back to action in Greenland 2

-

Paisley’s own Hollywood action hero has announced a sequel to his disaster movie ‘Greenland.’

Gerard Butler and his co-star Morena Baccarin will return to the big screen despite the film launching during an actual disaster, the coronavirus pandemic.

The original movie, in which the pair played John and Allison Garrity, a couple who attempt to flee from a comet strike with their son, defied dismal box office predictions to top the box office charts in 26 countries.

Now, Butler and Baccarin have signed on for a sequel titled Greenland: Migration, according to director Ric Roman Waugh.

Ric said: “Greenland spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death.”

In addition to the director and main cast, screenwriter Chris Sparling will also return to pen the script.

Former St Mirin’s and St Margaret’s High pupil Butler will also co-produce the sequel via his G-Base firm.

Filming is scheduled for next year.

Greenland: Migration will continue the story from the first film, with the Garrity family forced to leave the safety of the Greenland bunker.

They fled to what was hoped to be a safe haven during the first movie and embarked on a perilous journey across a frozen Europe.

The characters and their son Nathan were selected for air transport to a secret base as a planet-killing comet raced towards Earth.

In addition to making more than £35.5million, despite its release taking place mid-pandemic, the original also had an exclusive showing on HBO Max, Apple and Google Play’s rental charts.

Gerry, 51, spoke about how the first Greenland movie actually helped him deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said: “I think when you work a lot in disaster movies, actually, in some weird way, it does prepare you for disasters – whether that’s in your own life or on a larger scale like you’re seeing right now.

“Disaster movies resonate with everyone as we love to be entertained, to find some new way to be scared.”
