Shoplifter who stole protein powder was armed with a blade

Thief caught in the act on CCTV is jailed for having knife

A yob who went out armed with a blade during a shoplifting spree in Paisley has been banged up in jail by a sheriff.

Daniel Kujawski, 25, swiped tins of protein powder from The Range in the Renfrew Road Retail Park, and legged it from the shop without paying.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Kujawski, who was caught on CCTV, was later searched by cops who found him in possession of a knife.

Kujawski, admitted to officers, that he “didn’t know the law in this country,” when arrested for possessing the weapon in a public place.

He added he would be “cutting up boxes” later that day at his home in Springbank Road, Shortroods.

He appeared from custody yesterday before Sheriff Lindsey Kooner, where he pleaded guilty via a Polish interpreter to a charge of shoplifting at The Range in Paisley on December 5, 2019.

He also admitted possession of the DIY knife in a public place without reasonable excuse or lawful authority.

Defence agent Jim Clark said his client was facing extradition back to Poland on other matters, and had been remanded in jail to await a further court appearance.

He added Kujawski was admitting responsibility for the offences as he wanted the matter off his plate.

He said: “His plea of guilty was made early because the matter which had caused him greatest concern are the extradition proceedings raised against him by the Polish state.

“Although he continues to resist the application for extradition, he has been remanded in custody over this matter.

“He understands that your Ladyship will be somewhat constrained in what sentence can be imposed as there are no other offences which would automatically suggest the

“He understands the carrying of a knife is a serious offence, and I would ask the court take into account his early plea of guilty for the matter.”

Sheriff Kooner, who studied background reports in preparation for sentencing, said her hands were tied in dealing with the offence, and she would have to lock him up.

She told him: “I appreciate there are other matters, the extradition proceedings, but given your status, and the nature of the charge, there is no alternative sentence, viable or appropriate, other than custody.”

She handed him 108 days, for carrying the knife, and 54 days for the shoplifting, but ordered these sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will only do three-anda-half months.
