Get on the Paisley trail to discover Africa
A new discovery trail is being launched in Paisley today as part of the Black History Month celebrations.
The Discover Africa trail will showcase 11 African countries represented by communities living in and around Paisley, with displays in a number of town centre businesses.
Paisley First has launched the trail, in conjunction with the School of African Cultures, Pachedu and Action for Cultures and Ethics.
It aims to help people learn more about the history and cultures of countries such as Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya and Malawi.
The trail was the brainchild of Johannes Gonani from Pachedu, Samuel Yerokun of Action for Cultures and Ethics, and Regine Bews from the School of African Cultures.
Johannes said:“We want to thank Paisley First, the business circle in Renfrewshire, and, in particular, all the businesses which are hosting the Discover Africa exhibition in their premises.”
“This, to us, is a celebration and an acknowledgement and recognition of the presence of the African community in Renfrewshire,”added Samuel.“It is also helping to change the tainted narrative of the mother land, as the continent of Africa is affectionately known.”
Regine said:“We hope communities in Renfrewshire and beyond will find these trail activities enjoyable and educative.”
Trail leaflets are available from Paisley First racks at the Piazza Shopping Centre
Paisley and The Paisley Centre or to download from www.paisleyfirst.com
