A dopey yard worker was caught with a blade and almost £400 worth of cocaine after smoking cannabis under the noses of cops.

Daniel McFlynn, 28, was rumbled sitting in a grey Mercedes after police smelled weed wafting from the motor, which was parked in Linwood.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard McFlynn was searched on the evening of February 5, when officers discovered six wraps of Class-A powder in the car and a knife in the door pocket.

Procurator fiscal depute Maria Murdoch said: “At around 7pm, police witnesses were in Brediland Road, Linwood, when they observed a grey Mercedes vehicle stationary at the roadside.

“At that time, both police officers detected a strong smell of cannabis and noticed there were two persons within the vehicle.

“There were no other people nearby to where the smell was coming from and, as such, they decided to speak to the males.

“At that point, both males were detained for the purposes of a drug search.

“The accused stated, ‘I have got some Charlie as well.’

“Six wraps were recovered from the passenger footwell.

“A knife, with a three-and-ahalf-inch blade was recovered from the door pocket.”

The court heard when McFlynn was told he was under arrest, he told cops: “I forgot the knife was there.”

The white power wraps were later analysed and tested positive for cocaine.

They weighed nine grams, with a street value of £360.

McFlynn, of Atholl Place, Linwood, pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon.

He also admitted having cocaine in his possession.

Defence agent Laura Boyd said her client told cops the truth about the blade, as he works in a builder’s merchant’s yard and uses the knife to open boxes.

She said: “He took the knife away from his work and he fully accepts he should have left it at work or at home.

“He should not have had it in a public place.

“It was a simple error.”

She added his “cocaine consumption was due to the Covid-19 pandemic”, after he developed “feelings of isolation”.

However, this was immediately rubbished by Sheriff Eoin McGinty, who told him: “You are unlike many people who were actually isolated during the pandemic, and you work in a builder’s yard with people coming and going all the time.

“So that seems like nonsense.” He handed McFlynn a fine totalling £1,575 and added: “I have heard your comments in relation to the drugs and I just don’t buy it.”
