Passengers will be able to make the switch to becoming more environmentally friendly as three electric bus routes launch in Renfrewshire.

The McGill’s 26, 23 and 38 routes will all be powered by electric buses by the end of October with another two routes to follow in November.

The bus company has invested £32.5million investment in 68 zero emission buses which will see it become the largest operator of electric buses in Scotland.

Ralph Roberts, CEO of McGill’s Group said: “The scale of our investment truly demonstrates our commitment to the green agenda, and cements us as leaders in clean, zero emission journeys.

“This is just the beginning as we look to provide more and more game-changing technology to improve air quality in our towns and cities.

“There is a big call for bus operators to build back better, and even though the last two years have been extremely challenging, that’s exactly what we intend to do.

“There’s never been a better time to be a zero hero.”

The environmentally friendly buses - all branded Switch - on the 26 will serve Nethercraigs, Paisley, Renfrew, Braehead, Govan and Glasgow up to every seven minutes.

The Switch 23 goes from Erskine to Glasgow via Inchinnan, Renfrew and Braehead while the Switch 38 route starts at Spateston and finishes in Glasgow via Johnstone, Kibarchan, Linwood and Paisley.

Local residents will benefit from cleaner air while McGill’s said it’s invested in the latest bus technology to make sure rides are smooth and comfortable with personal USB ports at every seat.

The company has launched a major marketing campaign to encourage more residents to make the switch from their cars, including video content starring local people and McGill’s very own animated zero heroes.

The £32.5million investment is partly funded by the Scottish Government’s Scottish Ultra Low Emissions Bus Scheme (SULEB), which was set up to help drive the adoption of sustainable transport in Scotland.
