‘Replace speed bumps before there’s an accident’
Urgent action must be taken over speed bumps which have vanished in a Johnstone street, a councillor has insisted, writes Steph Brawn, Local Democracy Reporter.
For years there were speed bumps in the town’s John Lang Street near its junction with North Iverton Park Road.
But council staff removed them during the summer to make repairs to the road and have not put them back since.
Residents are now fearing there could soon be an accident on the long, straight road where cars historically raced over the speed limit before measures were implemented.
Johnstone councillor Andy Doig said roads bosses told him they would be replaced by March next year, but he has insisted they must be put back before Christmas.
“Local people are very much of the opinion that they are grateful for the road repairs, but want the speed bumps replaced,”said Councillor Doig.
“Earlier this month council officers confirmed to me they would make sure the speed bumps are replaced by March 2022, but neither myself nor my constituents think this is acceptable and we want them replaced sooner rather than later.
“It is a matter of health and safety and I strongly urge the council to re-think this timescale and act prior to Christmas.
“Historically John Lang Street needed speed bumps to deter drivers from speeding.
“It is a long, straight road and in these situations, some drivers are tempted to forget they are in a residential area and the dial goes above 30mph.
“With many minor roads off John Lang Street as well, this strengthens the case for speed bump replacement as soon as possible.”
John Lang Street was resurfaced as part of an £8million investment in the roads network by Renfrewshire Council this financial year.
There will be upgrades to roads and footpaths in every town and village in the region.
A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said:“We are currently working through the procurement process to allow these works to take place and will look to complete them as soon as possible once a contract is awarded.
“In the interim, we will continue to monitor the road to ensure it remains safe and would ask road users to comply with the speed limit at all times.”
