St Peter’s boss wants his side to step up game

- BEN RAMAGE

St Peter’s boss Paul McTaggart wants to see a marked improvement from his side this afternoon – despite the Paisley club winning their last match.

The Glenburn-based team beat Campbeltown Pupils 3-2 last weekend, despite going down to ten men in the second half when Scott Lewis saw red for reacting to a reckless challenge.

Even though they picked up all three points, McTaggart was still extremely disappointed with his team’s performance last weekend.

And he’s hoping for much better when they take on BSC Glasgow away from home this afternoon.

He told Express Sport: “The first half against Campbeltown was the poorest I’ve ever seen us defend.

“We just weren’t doing the basics right. “We must have had about 80 per cent of the possession but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after they scored from two simple long balls up the park.

“They’re a long ball team and it was hard to play against. Still, we were so poor and the boys knew that themselves.

“It’s the first time we’ve had really harsh words for the boys at half-time.

“We roasted them a bit and they reacted well in the second half.

“We got the winner late on, ironically from a long ball ourselves, but the boys knew we were well below par.

“The three points were all that mattered in the end but we’re looking for a much better performance against BSC.”

McTaggart insists Lewis was unfortunate to see red for reacting to a wild challenge in the second half.

He believes his players need more protection from referees to ensure they don’t need to take matters into their own hands.

McTaggart said: “It was an absolutely horrendous challenge on Scott.

“If he hadn’t been sent off we’d have had to take him off anyway because his knee was goosed.

“He’s pushed the boy who did it on his chest and the referee has said that he’s raised his arms.

“The boy who fouled him had a kick at him beforehand which should have been a free-kick. That would have stopped it ever getting to that stage.

“It could have been a leg-breaker and we’ve had it before against Finnart and Harmony Row already this season. We need more protection from the referees.”

St Peter’s are looking to add more depth to their squad, having already brought in midfielder Marc Storrie from Greenock on loan.

He made his debut against Campbeltown, and McTaggart is hoping to add even more firepower to his side in the coming weeks.

He added: “Marc did very well on his debut. He’s a composed midfielder and he played the entire ninety.

“We’ve got a new centre forward coming in soon too who we’re very excited about. He’s two-footed and looks very sharp in training already.”
