There’s no place like Braehead for ice hockey clubs
Glasgow Clan and Paisley Pirates are celebrating strong foundations after securing their home rink for the next two decades.
Following months of negotiations with Global Mutual, which saw both clubs’ futures hanging perilously in the balance, the Clan’s subsidiary company Glasgow Arena Ltd has now signed a long-term 20-year lease to become the new operators of Braehead Arena.
The 5,200 capacity multipurpose venue will see public ice skating feature as part of a new exciting brand encompassing the name, Braehead Ice Centre.
Delighted Glasgow Arena Ltd director Gareth Chalmers said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to confirm we are the new operators of Braehead Arena.
“The signing of a 20-year lease demonstrates our long-term commitment to the venue, bringing world-class entertainment to the West of Scotland while continuing the rich history of ice in the Renfrewshire and Greater Glasgow area.
“We would like to thank Global Mutual, Peter Beagley, Lydia Brown and all the management team at Braehead Shopping Centre, Sport Scotland, Renfrewshire Council, MP Gavin Newlands, Councillors John Shaw and Lisa-Marie Hughes, the Paisley Pirates and not least all the fantastic Clan fans for their patience and support in helping us finally get across the finishing line.
“The real hard work begins now, we know the scale of the challenge and we will do everything we can to make this venue a success.”
